Navigating Parenting Challenges: A Journey with ADHD

Writer: Simon BrazierSimon Brazier

Parenting is a journey filled with ups and downs, and for some, it involves navigating the complexities of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). In this blog, we explore the heartfelt story of Mary Quittell and her adopted son, Ziah, who faced significant challenges due to ADHD and other mental health issues. Mary’s experience highlights the importance of understanding, support, and alternative approaches to managing ADHD symptoms.

The Beginning of the Journey

Mary's journey began with a decision to adopt Ziah, a child born into challenging circumstances due to his birth parents’ substance abuse. Initially, Ziah was placed in a foster home where he thrived, meeting all developmental milestones. However, as he entered kindergarten, signs of struggle began to emerge.

Mary recalls, “He started hiding under tables and regressing in learning. Everything I taught him before kindergarten seemed to vanish.” This regression was alarming and prompted Mary to seek help from a pediatrician.

Encountering the Medical System

Mary’s first interactions with the conventional medical system were daunting. She sought guidance from a pediatrician after noticing Ziah's behavioural issues in school. “It was terrifying,” she admitted. The pediatrician quickly suggested pharmaceuticals to manage Ziah’s ADHD symptoms.

Despite her reservations about medication, Mary felt compelled to consider all options for Ziah’s well-being. However, her concerns grew as she learned about the potential side effects of drugs commonly prescribed for ADHD. “I didn’t want to add more side effects to what he was already experiencing,” she explained.

Challenges in School

The school environment proved to be a significant challenge for Ziah. Mary received numerous emails from his teachers expressing concerns about his behaviour, including incidents of impulsivity and aggression. “It was hard to deal with the school,” Mary reflected. “The teachers seemed to place the blame solely on him.”

In grade one, Ziah’s impulsive actions led to severe incidents, prompting the school to refer him for psychological assessment. This referral was a turning point, allowing for a deeper understanding of Ziah’s needs.

The Assessment Process

Mary described the assessment process as extensive, involving a team of professionals who evaluated Ziah's behaviour across various settings. Ultimately, he was diagnosed with ADHD and recognized for having high sensory needs. However, the absence of a diagnosis for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) meant that Ziah would not receive additional funding or support in school.

Mary's frustration was palpable as she realized the implications of this diagnosis. “We were told we would have to fight for him,” she shared, highlighting the systemic challenges many parents face when advocating for their children with ADHD.

Turning to Alternative Solutions

After a series of medications that resulted in severe side effects for Ziah, Mary decided to explore alternative solutions. She was introduced to True Hope Canada's micronutrient supplementation products, Empower Plus and Freeminos.

“I was at my wit's end with pharmaceuticals,” Mary stated. She was motivated to find a solution that would help Ziah without the adverse side effects of traditional medications. Her sister’s fiancé had also experienced similar challenges and found success with the True Hope products.

Initial Experiences with Micronutrient Supplementation

Mary first introduced Ziah to Freeminos, and the results were promising. “He started on two capsules, and as he grew, we adjusted his dosage,” she explained. The initial improvements were evident within days. “The teacher noticed a significant difference in his ability to focus and complete tasks,” Mary said with relief.

“He was less scattered and more present,” she added, indicating that the supplementation was helping him manage his ADHD symptoms more effectively than pharmaceuticals had.

Sharing the Experience

Mary has not only witnessed Ziah's transformation but has also shared her story with others in her community. “I’ve spoken to coworkers and friends about Ziah’s experience,” she shared. Many were intrigued and sought to learn more about the supplements. Mary emphasized sharing success stories to encourage others to consider alternative options.

“It’s not just about ADHD; it’s about overall mental health and well-being,” she noted. Her story resonated with many parents facing similar challenges.

Personal Reflections

Throughout this journey, Mary has faced her struggles as a single parent. The stress of managing Ziah’s ADHD while maintaining her well-being took a toll. “I had a mental breakdown at one point,” she confessed, expressing the overwhelming nature of her responsibilities.

Despite the challenges, Mary remains hopeful. “Ziah is doing amazing now,” she said. He is learning to recognize his emotions and implement coping strategies, a skill he is developing with the help of micronutrient supplementation.

The Importance of Community Support

Mary’s experience underscores the importance of community and support systems for parents navigating ADHD. “It’s essential to have a network of people who understand what you’re going through,” she emphasized. Finding a supportive community can alleviate feelings of isolation and provide valuable resources.

Mary also highlighted the importance of open communication with educators. By discussing Ziah’s needs with his teachers, she was able to foster a better understanding of his behaviour and advocate for appropriate accommodations in the classroom.

Looking Ahead

As Ziah approaches puberty, Mary is aware of the challenges ahead. Hormonal changes and social dynamics can complicate his experience with ADHD. “He’s starting to grapple with feelings of sadness and loss related to his adoption,” Mary shared. She remains committed to supporting him through these transitions.

Currently, Ziah is also on a low dose of antidepressants to help manage his emotional well-being. “We’re monitoring his progress closely,” Mary stated, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach combining medication and supplementation.

Conclusion

Mary’s story is a powerful reminder of the complexities of parenting a child with ADHD. It highlights the importance of being open to alternative solutions and seeking professional and community support. As parents navigate the challenges of ADHD, it is crucial to prioritize their children’s well-being while also taking care of their mental health.

For those facing similar challenges, Mary’s journey offers hope and inspiration. With the proper support and resources, it is possible to foster a positive environment for children with ADHD, allowing them to thrive and reach their full potential.
